The route passes through some unique and ancient rural buildings near the Vermiglio cross-country ski center and is suitable for everyone.

The trail unfolds by walking along the gentle slopes of Velon locality. The tranquility of the fir forest, the gentle rustle of flowing water together with the glitter of snow make this walk a simple but pleasant nature hike. The loop return is along a short section of provincial road back to the parking lot.

Attention: there are cross-country ski tracks near the trail, it is recommended not to ruin them by walking on them.

Safety information

For snow hiking activities follow these guidelines:

  • Be well informed about the route and its conditions before you go. You can do this by contacting your nearest tourist information office;
  • the day before the hike consult the weather forecast and avalanche bulletin;
  • if you plan to reach an alpine hut or refuge, make sure they are open and, if you plan to stop for food or sleep, call them in advance to make reservations;
  • before you leave, if you don't feel well, postpone going out until you feel better;
  • never leave garbage at high altitudes and,if possible, avoid leaving it at the huts or pastures you will visit;
  • if you spot wild animals along the trail, please do not approach them, do not shout and keep your dog on a leash, lest by instinct it chase them, scaring them away.

Velon Hut

Directions

Park your car in the Velon locality and follow the signs with the snowshoe drawn on it. The route runs along a section of the cross-country ski trail and, walking along the forest road, you will make a very easy loop walk, with no particular gradients and therefore suitable for everyone, including children. Enjoy the tranquility of the village of Vermiglio, the silence that reigns in the forest, and lose yourself in the sparkle of the frost on the snowy landscape.

How to get there

Drive along the SS42 in the direction of Passo Tonale and, roughly at the height of the White War Museum, follow the signs for locality Velon on your left.

Where to park

Park your car in the Velon locality.

Here is a list of items you should have with you when undertaking snowshoeing:

  • waterproof boots;
  • snowshoes and trekking poles. To rent them, choose the rental closest to you;
  • comfortable, warm winter clothing;
  • face mask, as required by COVID-19 safety protocol.
  • beanie, gloves, sunglasses and sunscreen;
  • backpack with a snack and thermos of hot drink;
  • MANDATORY avalanche self-rescue kit 'where, due to nivometeorological conditions, there is a risk of avalanches' (Art.26 Legislative Decree Feb. 28, 2021 No. 40). The kit consists of Artva, shovel and probe, and before you embark on any excursion, make sure you know how to use it. You can possibly rent it in stores that offer this service;
  • camera or cell phone to capture the views and vistas you like best. If you then feel like it, you can share them on social using #valdisolevibes.
