Suggestions

A unique emotional experience among the high altitudes of Val di Sole, in Trentino. The imposing Forni Glacier, overlooked by the Thirteen Peaks, characterizes the crossing discovering the southernmost part of this splendid mountain group. The panorama will span a large part of the southeastern Alps chain: the Dolomites, the Bernina Group, and the Silvretta will dazzle our eyes! These peaks were the scene of the "White War".

Starting point

Coler Rabbi Parking

Directions

1st DAY: SAÈNT HUT «S. DORIGONI»
EE - Expert Hikers
Starting point from the parking lot in Coler locality in Val di Rabbi. The parking lot can be reached by car or with shuttles up to 16 seats. From here a shuttle bus (for a fee) departs to Malga Stablasolo (1,529 m, saving about 30 minutes of walking). With SAT trail 106 you ascend to Dosso della Croce (1,796 m), then to Prà di Saènt with its characteristic mountain hut. Continue to Malga Vecla where the «Alpinists' Path» takes you to Palina (2,100 m). Following the left side of the Rabbies Torrent, through a landscape rich in rhododendrons and marmots, you reach the Saènt Hut «S. Dorigoni» (2,436 m).

2nd DAY: STERNAI PEAK
EEA - Expert Hikers with Equipment
From the Saènt Hut «S. Dorigoni» (2,436 m) you ascend via SAT trail 101 to the first Sternai Lake, from which stone cairns mark the circuit of the Sternai Lakes. Arriving near the junction indicated by larch wood signs (at 2,700 m), continue along a path always marked by stone cairns until reaching Sternai Peak (3,443 m). The Sternai Glacier, especially after the end of July, always requires the use of crampons. Therefore, rope and harness are essential to secure yourself to the anchors with carabiners already fixed on the rock.

3rd DAY: CEVEDALE HUT «G. LARCHER»
EEA - Expert Hikers with Equipment
From the Saènt Hut «S. Dorigoni», following first SAT trail 101 and then SAT trail 104 near a junction close to the bridge, you reach Bocca di Saènt (3,121 m), where a 4 m high larch pole has been placed for orientation in case of fog. From here opens the spectacular view of the Careser Glacier, the Venezie Peaks, and Cima Rossa. The crossing to Cevedale Hut is the natural connection between the upper Val di Peio (Val de la Mare) and the upper Val di Rabbi (Val di Saènt). Due to the rapid retreat of the Careser Glacier, a new route has been traced crossing its easternmost area. The glacier section is about 1 km long and not steep enough to risk slipping. From Bocca di Saènt you cross flat terrain keeping about 500 m to the right (north) of the rocky ridge that connects Cima Careser to Cima Campisol and, always walking parallel to this ridge, you reach the glacier's end where a large wooden pole identical to that at Bocca di Saènt is located. From here starts again SAT trail 104, marked with white and red signs, leading to the Cevedale Hut «G. Larcher» (2,608 m).
During the crossing you enjoy the best panorama on the ridge from Monte Vioz to Monte Cevedale and can realize the past action of the glaciers and their environmental and climatic significance. It is recommended to hike in good visibility conditions and with adequate training on high-altitude routes. In case of recent snowfall, the ascent to Bocca di Saènt and the glacier crossing become difficult also due to lack of tracks. Hiking poles are very useful. The use of rope and crampons, if following the marked route, is usually not necessary. It is advisable to inquire about glacier conditions at Rifugio Dorigoni or Rifugio Larcher.
From Bocca di Saènt you can extend the day’s itinerary with the ascent to Cima Rossa: to reach the summit you cross flat terrain westwards over the glacier at the base of the rocky ridge and then, over a rocky slope, reach the ridge leading to Cima Rossa di Saènt (3,347 m). It is recommended to hike in dry ground conditions. Take care when walking on the rocky debris that leads from the Careser Glacier to the summit. Return via the same route to Bocca di Saènt (3,121 m), from where you resume the crossing that leads to Cevedale Hut.

4th DAY: MONTE CEVEDALE
EEA - Expert Hikers with Equipment
From the Cevedale Hut «G. Larcher» follow SAT trail 103 descending slightly to a junction indicating «Glacier route». Then take the glacier route that climbs along a moraine until reaching the De la Mare Glacier. Now, paying attention to numerous crevices, the path winds towards Monte Rosole; just before it, follow on the right the icy ridge that leads directly to the summit cross of Monte Cevedale (3,679 m). To return to Rifugio Larcher follow the same ascent itinerary.

5th DAY: MONTE VIOZ AND VIOZ MANTOVA HUT
EEA - Expert Hikers with Equipment
From the Cevedale Hut «G. Larcher», follow SAT trail 103 descending slightly to a junction indicating «Glacier route», take the glacier route that climbs along a moraine until reaching the De la Mare Glacier. Now follow the glacier towards Col de la Mare, where just before the pass turn left overcoming a first steep stretch, following the ridge leading to Palon de la Mare (3,703 m). Descending follow the ridge first snowy then rocky leading to Passo della Vedretta Rossa (3,403 m), then ascending over the Forni Glacier you reach Monte Vioz (3,645 m) from where you descend to the Vioz Mantova Hut (3,535 m).

6th DAY: PUNTA LINKE
EEA - Expert Hikers
From Vioz Mantova Hut ascend Monte Vioz and from here cross a short stretch of the Forni Glacier up to Punta Linke (3,631 m) where the highest archaeological site related to the First World War is located. Returning to the hut, descend following SAT trail 105 and in the final part deviate to SAT trail 139 until reaching Doss dei Gembri Hut (2,380 m). From here first by chairlift and then by cable car you reach Peio Terme (1,383 m).
