Suggestions

From the hut, walk a few meters to separate you from the summit of Monte Vioz (about 15 minutes). From here it is possible to reach Punta Linke (3,632 m), one of the highest and most important nerve centers of the western front line during World War I, also known as the White War, for the constant battles on the snow and endless ice of the Ortles-Cevedale group. Over the decades, ice and snow have preserved the entire fort in its original state, allowing for an exceptional high-altitude museum.

Directions

EE - Expert Hikers

The start is from Peio Village, in Loc. San Rocco near the Austro-Hungarian Cemetery. Take the SAT 105 trail on the right following the signs for Malga Saline. Once at the hut, continue along the SAT 105 trail on a route that is not particularly long but steep, until you reach the locality "Saroden" and follow the path along the "Filon de i Omeni". From here, follow SAT 105, an old military road dating back to 1915/18, which after a series of switchbacks will lead you to the ridge of Monte Vioz. Continuing uphill (not too steep) you will pass the Dente del Vioz, a characteristic tooth-shaped tower, then after more steep switchbacks to Brick (3,206 m) a section of road equipped with metal cables (be careful here). The last part of the ascent, on some tight switchbacks, leads you to Rifugio Vioz Mantova (3,535 m). You will enjoy a breathtaking view of the thirteen peaks, the Adamello-Presanella, and the Brenta Dolomites.

The route can be shortened by starting from Peio Fonti, where you take the Tarlenta cable car to Rifugio Scoiattolo and then the chairlift to Rifugio Doss dei Gembri (2,380 m).
