E - Escursionistico (Hiker)
Departure point is the car park at Pozzi Alti (1.884m), reachable by way of an old military dirt road from Stavel in the village of Vermiglio. The 6.2km road is accessible to everybody and there is no need for a permit. If you wish to go on foot, take the SAT 233 which goes to the ex Austrian-Hungarian military fort (at one time used to defend Tonale) Forte Pozzi Alti (1h 30min). From the car park take the SAT 233 towards the dug-out tunnel in the rocks and some channels until crossing the SAT 206 which goes straight up to Stavel. Continue in the direction of Rifugio Stavel F. Denza (2.298m) which can be found directly below the north wall of the Cima Presanella (3.558m), the highest mountain in Trentino. The rifugio is of great historical interest concerning the First World War, and in particular the small wooden church.
By train to Trento (Verona-Brennero line) and from here, take the Trento-Malè-Mezzana (Val di Sole) local train to any station where buses are available, for the latest timetable go to www.valdisole.net/EN/Public-Transportation.
FROM BOLOGNA-VERONA AND FROM BRENNERO
Take the A22 motorway and exit at Trento Nord (if you are coming from the south) or S. Michele all’Adige (if you coming from the north). Proceed in direction Cles, Val di Non, Val di Sole, to Vermiglio.
FROM BERGAMO-BRESCIA
Proceed along the SS42 (direction Passo Tonale), and follow the signs to Vermiglio.
From Vermiglio follow the signs to Velon. Immediately after Hotel Baita Velon take the dirt road which goes up to Fort Pozzi Alti.
