The ascent to the small pass “La Forcola” takes place on an easy and not too steep path until the last 100-150 meters of elevation gain; then the trail steepens and the last meters become a ramp.

The effort spent to reach this small pass is richly rewarded by the panorama you can enjoy from this spot, including views of the Cevedale glacier, the entire Val Venezia, and the glacier at the foot of the Zufallspitzen.

Starting point

Malga Mare - Parking (1835 m)

Directions

From the Malga Mare parking lot, after passing the characteristic little chapel, you ascend via a mule track that in about 10 minutes leads to Malga Mare (2031 m). Ignoring the junction with trail 123 (towards Laghi del Careser), you continue straight on trail 102, which immediately develops in the typical environment of the area, with abundant greenery and many waterfalls.

Passing through picturesque small waterfalls, you enter the beautiful forest of Swiss stone pines and larches. With some switchbacks, you reach a grassy ridge that you climb up until you reach Pian Venezia (hut/viewpoint on the right).

The view of Val Venezia and the Cevedale is splendid. At Pian Venezia, next to the hut, you spot trail number 146, which will be taken on the descent.

Trail 102 continues north with a gentle slope, steadily gaining altitude, leading to Rifugio Larcher (2608 m), a comfortable mountain refuge.

Cross to the opposite side from the ascent, and to the left of the chapel, there is trail 103 that leads to La Forcola.

The trail initially descends into the hollow below and enters the center of the valley that climbs towards the pass.

At the signpost indicating the junction between trail 103 and the glacier route, turn right and climb along the slope with some switchbacks and steep sections until you reach La Forcola at 3032 m.

The return follows the same path taken on the way up.

How to get there

From the village of Ossana in the upper Val di Sole, take the road towards Val di Pejo. At the village of Cogolo, follow the signs for “Malga Mare” to the right and drive the entire Val De La Mare on a narrow asphalt road up to the locality Malga Ponte Vecchio (1762 m), where a toll of €2.50 is required. Then continue by car for about another 2.5 km until you reach the parking lot at Malga Mare (1972 m).
For a mountain hike it is always useful to:
  • Wear trekking boots suitable for uneven, irregular, and wet terrain, long trousers, a cap, and sunglasses.
  • Put in your backpack a waterproof jacket, a fleece sweater, hat and gloves, sunscreen, and minimal spare clothing.
  • Bring a water bottle and snacks for energy drops (dried fruit, bars, or chocolate).
  • Do not forget a camera or mobile phone to capture the panoramas and views you like most. If you wish, you can then share them on social media using #visitvaldisole.
