Safety information

Rules for mountain hikes:
  • The accessibility of trails in mountain environments is closely linked to current conditions and therefore depends on natural events, environmental changes, and weather. Always gather detailed information about the route and its conditions before setting off. You can do this by contacting the nearest information office.
  • If you plan to reach an alpine hut or refuge, make sure it is open. If you want to eat or sleep there, call in advance to book.
  • Leave information about your planned route and always carry your phone with you.
  • In case of emergency, call 112.
  • Never leave rubbish at high altitude and, if possible, avoid leaving it at huts or alpine farms.
  • If you spot wild animals along the trail, stay on the path, do not get too close, avoid shouting, and keep your dog on a leash to prevent it from instinctively chasing and scaring them.

Starting point

Ossana - Road to Valpiana

Directions

The Charcoal Burners' Path, so called because in wartime it was used to carry coal downhill, leads with a simple 25-minute walk to Bosco Derniga and starts from the road to Valpiana. Once you arrive, we recommend you venture into Bosco Derniga and discover the garden that reproduces the biodiversity of Trentino and allows you to experience a sensory path among the secrets and wonders of the alpine forest, where you can try the experience of smelling the scent of flowers, tasting the flavor of aromatic herbs, and listening to the sounds of wood. In short, Bosco Derniga is a true oasis of peace where you can take a break to reconnect with nature and breathe deeply the scent of the lush forests of the Adamello-Presanella Group.

There are two other alternatives to reach Bosco Derniga:

  • Garden of the Senses: starts from Piazza San Vigilio. The path first runs through a meadow, then enters a dense fir forest, finishing by crossing a peat bog. Not suitable for bikes or strollers. Return via the same route. Along the path are panels accessible to people with visual disabilities.
  • Walk through Time, among the flowers: starts from Piazza San Vigilio. Along the forest road there are 12 flower beds guiding the visitor. The route is also suitable for bicycles and strollers. Return via the same path.

Public transportation

You can reach the town of Ossana by the line bus MALÈ - PASSO DEL TONALE (download outbound and return timetables) or by the line bus MALÈ - MEZZANA - FUCINE - COGOLO - PEIO (download outbound and return timetables).

How to get there

Follow the SS42 to the town of Ossana, then follow the signs toward Valpiana.

Where to park

You can leave the car at the beginning of Valpiana, where there is a small parking area.
