Suggestions

You can reach the malga comfortably by car on a paved road.

Safety information

For a mountain hike we suggest you to:

  • choose a route suitable for your fitness level. If in doubt, contact the Alpine Guides or our Information Offices
  • prepare your hike: check the weather forecast, the route to follow, and the operating times of the ski lifts if your itinerary includes their use. Remember that the accessibility of routes in a mountain environment is strictly linked to the current conditions and therefore depends on natural phenomena, environmental changes, and weather conditions. For this reason, obtain thorough information about the route and its condition before leaving
  • leave information about your route and approximate return time and carry your mobile phone
  • pay attention to signs and markings you find along the route: Stelvio Park signs, white and red SAT signs, and red and white markings on stones or trees
  • book in advance the malga or refuge where you intend to stop to eat or sleep
  • never leave waste at high altitude and if possible avoid leaving it at the refuges or malgas you visit
  • if you spot wild animals along the route, we invite you to stay on the trail you are following, do not approach too closely, do not shout, and keep your dog on a leash to prevent it from instinctively chasing and scaring them

Starting point

Valbiolo chairlift parking lot

Directions

Once you have left the car in the Valbiolo chairlift parking lot at Passo del Tonale, you start walking along the paved road that climbs steadily and gently towards the Ospizio San Bartolomeo. After about a 20-minute easy walk, you reach Malga Tonale located at an altitude of 1,930 meters where you can admire dairy cows that spend the summer months here. The return is planned along the same route.

Once back at the Valbiolo parking lot, we recommend visiting the Torbiera del Tonale, a large wetland basin characterized by exceptional biodiversity richness that hosts numerous plant species common in Arctic regions, but very rare in the Alps and is an ideal habitat for many species of amphibians, reptiles, and insects, including the dragonfly and the Alpine newt. It is visitable via an interesting thematic path.

Public transportation

You can reach Passo del Tonale by the MALÈ - MEZZANA - FUCINE - VERMIGLIO - TONALE line bus (download the schedules for outbound and return).

How to get there

Follow the SS42 until you reach Passo del Tonale.

Where to park

You can leave your car in the Valbiolo chairlift parking lot.
