Suggestions

Being a high altitude route, if you are lucky you may see marmots, chamois, and the golden eagle.

Safety information

For a mountain hike, we suggest you:

  • choose a route suitable for your experience level. If in doubt, contact the Mountain Guides or our Information Offices
  • prepare your hike: check the weather forecast, the route you will follow, and the operating times of cable cars if your itinerary involves their use. Remember that the passability of mountain routes is strictly linked to current conditions and thus depends on natural phenomena, environmental changes, and weather conditions. For this reason, inform yourself well about the route and its conditions before setting out
  • leave information about your itinerary, your approximate return time, and carry your mobile phone
  • pay attention to signs and markings you find on the route: Stelvio Park signs, white and red SAT signs, and red and white marks on stones or trees
  • book in advance the malga or refuge where you plan to eat or sleep
  • never leave waste at altitude and, if possible, avoid leaving it at refuges or malgas you visit
  • if you see wild animals along the way, please remain on the trail, do not approach closely, do not shout, and keep your dog on a leash to prevent it from chasing them out of instinct and frightening them

Starting point

Ortisè

Directions

From the SS42, follow the signs to the village of Ortisè, part of the Municipality of Mezzana.

From here, follow the signs to Malga Stabli (1,814 m), where you can park. Then follow the forest road, which is also SAT path 121B, passing through wide and green pastures to reach Malga Bronzolo at an altitude of 2,084 meters.

Leaving the malga behind, follow the SAT path 121A towards Passo Valletta until you meet SAT path 121. Ascend along high mountain pastures until the last steeper stretch that reaches Passo Valletta (2,694 m). From here, you can admire the northern area of the Brenta Dolomites including Cima Peller and Sasso Rosso, plus the Adamello Presanella Group, particularly the Croce della Pace and Cima Laste.

From the pass, you can already glimpse the lakes on the Val di Rabbi side. Going down, you first encounter Lago Alto and then Lago Rotondo (2,427 m). The return is planned along the same route as the outward journey.
