Suggestions

The larch forest that characterizes this wood in the Stelvio National Park hosts numerous ungulates such as deer and roe deer, easily spotted in the early and late hours of light.

Safety information

To face a mountain hike we suggest you:

  • choose a route suitable for your preparation. In case of doubt, contact the Alpine Guides or our Information Offices;
  • prepare your hike: check the weather forecast, the route you will follow and the opening hours of lifts, if your itinerary involves them. Remember that the passability of routes in a mountain environment is strictly linked to current conditions and therefore depends on natural phenomena, environmental changes and weather conditions. For this reason, get good information about the route and its conditions before leaving;
  • leave information about your itinerary, approximate return time and take your cell phone with you;
  • pay attention to the signs and markings you find on the route: Stelvio Park signs, white and red SAT signs and red and white brush strokes on stones or trees; call 112 to alert in case of an accident;
  • book in advance the malga or refuge where you intend to stop to eat or sleep; never leave rubbish at altitude and, if possible, avoid leaving it at the refuges or malgas you visit;
  • if you see wild animals along the route, we invite you to stay on the path you are following, not get too close, do not shout and keep your dog on a leash to avoid it instinctively chasing and scaring them.

ANTI COVID-19 RULES:

  • mask use must be observed even in the mountains;
  • keep a safety distance of at least 2 meters from people;
  • avoid exchanging personal effects, tools and water bottles or flasks with others;
  • carry hand sanitizer to frequently disinfect hands and surfaces;

Starting point

loc. Cavallar

Directions

After leaving the car in the parking lot at loc. Cavallar, walk back to the entrance of the parking lot and turn right to rejoin the forest road. Stay on the dirt road until, after more than an hour of walking, you will reach Malga Paludé - Caldesa bassa.

On the return, we suggest you enter the woods to breathe in the tranquility and peace, following the Italia SAT 108 and SAT 130 trails, which will lead you back to Cavallar, where you parked your car.

From June to September, Line 4 of the Stelviobus Rabbi shuttle bus service reaches the malga directly, if you really don’t feel like walking but don’t want to miss the beautiful views and the tranquility of the pastures.

Where to park

Loc. Cavallar, reachable from Piazzola di Rabbi.

We recommend, especially on busy days, reaching the parking early in the morning as capacity is limited.

To face a mountain hike it is always useful to:

  • wear trekking boots suitable for uneven, irregular, and wet terrain, long pants, hat and sunglasses;
  • pack a waterproof jacket, a fleece, hat and gloves, sunscreen, minimum spare clothing in your backpack;
  • bring a water bottle and snacks for energy dips (nuts, bars, or chocolate);
  • don't forget a camera or phone to capture the views and scenes you like most. If you wish, you can share them on social media using #visitvaldisole and #spazioaltuotempo
