A short walk inside the Stelvio National Park along the shores of Lake Pian Palù with its crystal-clear colors. Elevation gain: 300 meters. Round trip distance: 4.4 km.
You start from Peio Terme and at the hairpin bend, take the road on the left, following Val del Monte and reaching the parking area at Fontanino. After tasting the ferruginous water at the small white mountain hut, you take the dirt road immediately to the right. After a couple of switchbacks, the road levels out and leads to the dam wall. Continue along the forest road, where the woods open up to reveal a wide pasture from which you can admire Lake Pian Palù. At the edge of the forest, you reach Malga Giumella. The mountain hut is also a crossroads for other trails, leading left towards Malga Paludei and right towards Pian della Vegaia first, and then via the military road to Malga Frattasecca.

Suggestions

Ferruginous water spring. Alder forest. Pian Palù dam, built after World War II. A family-friendly walk. Accessible with strollers, but not recommended due to the uneven surface of the dirt road and the 300-meter elevation gain.

Safety information

Rules for mountain hikes:
  • The accessibility of mountain trails is closely tied to current conditions and therefore depends on natural phenomena, environmental changes, and weather conditions. For this reason, make sure to thoroughly research the trail and its conditions before setting off. You can do this by contacting the nearest Information Office.
  • If you plan to reach an alpine dairy farm, or a mountain hut, ensure they are open, and if you intend to stop for food or accommodation, call in advance to make a reservation.
  • Tell someone about your trip and always carry your mobile phone with you.
  • In case of an accident, call 112.
  • Never leave litter at high altitudes, and if possible, avoid leaving it at the mountain huts or at the alpine dairy farms.
  • If you spot wildlife along the way, we urge you to stay on the trail, avoid getting too close, don't shout, and keep your dog on a leash to prevent it from instinctively chasing and frightening the animals.
