A refreshing walk that unfolds along the course of the Vermigliana stream, from the charming Laghetti di San Leonardo to the characteristic Stavel farmhouses.
From the picturesque Laghetti di San Leonardo, where we recommend stopping for an outdoor picnic or enjoying a break in the shade, this simple walk begins, following the sparkling waters of the Vermigliana stream. From the lakes, the route leads to the Stavel farmhouses, charming alpine structures that were used by farmers during the summer months as barns and chalets. For the return, turn left and head back to Vermiglio along a comfortable dirt road. The path is stroller-friendly up to the Stavel farmhouses; beyond that, you will need to retrace your steps along the same route or take the paved "Via dela Prada" road back to the starting point.

Rules for Mountain Walks:

  • The accessibility of mountain routes is closely tied to current conditions and depends on natural phenomena, environmental changes, and weather conditions. Always check the trail and its condition before setting out. You can do so by contacting the nearest Information Office.
  • If you plan to visit an alpine hut or refuge, ensure they are open. If you intend to stop for a meal or overnight stay, call ahead to make a reservation.
  • Leave details of your itinerary with someone and always carry a mobile phone.
  • In case of an emergency, call 112.
  • Never leave litter in high-altitude areas, and if possible, avoid leaving it at refuges or alpine huts you visit.
  • If you encounter wildlife along the trail, stay on the path, do not approach them, avoid shouting, and keep your dog on a leash to prevent it from chasing and scaring the animals.

Starting point

Vermiglio – Laghetti San Leonardo

Directions

Starting from the Laghetti di San Leonardo, where you can park your car, follow the dedicated signage with identification number 15. This refreshing walk begins along the Vermigliana stream, passing through Loc. Volpaia and reaching the Stavel farmhouses (stroller-accessible to this point, with the option to return along the same route or via the paved road “Via dela Prada” back to the starting point). From here, the loop trail turns left after crossing the bridge over the Vermigliana stream, heading back toward Vermiglio along a dirt road that initially climbs steeply for a short stretch before descending and leveling out.

Alternatively, for those who wish to complete the full loop, continue along the provincial road for about 300 meters. Then cross it and take the short but steep trail through a dense spruce forest, reaching the Ghiane farmhouses. From here, the trail continues through a deciduous forest and crosses a picturesque suspension bridge, eventually arriving at Vermiglio on Via di Dossi and returning to the Laghetti di San Leonardo.

For a more relaxed option, enjoy a peaceful and pleasant half-hour walk around the lakes themselves. These three charming artificial ponds are enriched by the cheerful presence of playful ducks. Here, you'll find picnic areas, a playground for children, a snack bar, a small soccer field, and various trail park equipment for Bike Trail enthusiasts. Thanks to evening lighting, you can also enjoy a romantic nighttime stroll.
