Safety information

For snow hiking activities, follow these guidelines:

• get well informed about the route and its conditions before you leave. You can do this by contacting the nearest tourist information office;
• the day before the hike, check the weather and the level of avalanche danger;
• if you plan to reach a mountain hut or refuge, make sure they are open and if you intend to stop for food or overnight, call them in advance to book;
• before leaving, if you don't feel well, postpone the outing until you feel better;
• never leave waste in high altitude and, if possible, avoid leaving it at the huts or shelters you visit;
• if you notice wild animals on the path, we invite you not to approach them, not to shout, and keep your dog on a leash to prevent it from chasing or scaring them out of instinct.

San Bernardo (1,093 m) - passage between the masi of Valorz - Baito Forestale (1,364 m) - return along the right bank of the Valorz river

 
From the parking lot near the Tourist Office in San Bernardo, holding the snowshoes in your hand, go down the road and cross the Rabbies stream.
Pass two stables and an old farmhouse until you reach a small bridge over the Valorz river, near which you can put on the snowshoes.

Climb along the path among the characteristic masi, witnesses of the farming past of Val di Rabbi and, after crossing a wooden bridge, enter the forest of the Valorz valley until you reach the Baito Forestale (1,364 m), located in front of the well-known frozen Valorz waterfalls, popular among ice climbing enthusiasts.

Once you reach this panoramic point, retrace the route back to the parking lot at an altitude of 1,246 m. Cross the bridge over the Valorz river and continue along the right bank to return to the starting point.

How to get there

Follow the SP86 of Val di Rabbi to San Bernardo and park near the Tourist Information Office. 

Where to park

Here is a list of items you should have with you when you go snowshoeing: 

• waterproof boots;
• snowshoes and trekking poles. To rent them, choose the rental closest to you;
• waterproof, comfortable, and warm winter clothing;
• mask, as required by the COVID-19 safety protocol;
• hat, gloves, sunglasses, and sunscreen;
• a backpack with a snack and a thermos of hot drink;
• mandatory avalanche self-rescue kit 'where, due to snow and weather conditions, there is a risk of avalanches' (Art.26 Legislative Decree 28 February 2021 n.40). The kit consists of an avalanche beacon (Artva), shovel, and probe, and before undertaking any hike, make sure you know how to use it.
