Safety information

To safely enjoy a hike in the mountains, we recommend:

  • choosing a trail that matches your level of preparation. If in doubt, contact the Alpine Guides or our Information Offices
  • preparing your hike in advance: check the weather forecast, study the route you'll take, and verify the opening hours of any lift systems, if your itinerary includes them. Keep in mind that trail conditions in the mountains depend heavily on current circumstances such as natural events, environmental changes, and weather. Always get up-to-date information before setting off
  • informing someone about your route and estimated return time, and taking your phone with you
  • paying attention to the signs and trail markers along the way: Stelvio National Park signs, SAT white and red markers, and red and white paint marks on rocks or trees
  • booking in advance any malga or mountain hut where you plan to eat or sleep
  • never leaving trash in high-altitude areas; if possible, avoid leaving it even at the huts or malghe you visit
  • if you spot wild animals along the trail, stay on the path, don’t get too close, avoid shouting, and keep your dog on a leash to prevent it from instinctively chasing or scaring them

Starting point

Parking above the village of Ortisè, where the road is no longer paved.

Directions

Starting from the parking area above the village of Ortisè, you reach Malga Stabli and from there continue towards Malga Bronzolo without actually reaching it. About 200 meters before the malga, at the hairpin bend, turn left towards Baita degli Alpini. Upon reaching this shelter, cross the stream and follow the pleasant flat trail leading to Malga Vallenaia. From Malga Vallenaia, descend along the road that returns to the parking lot.

Alternatively, once you reach Baita Pozze, you can continue along the SAT trail 152 passing Malga Monte, which now houses the Alpine Epigraphy Museum, and then reach the small Celentino Lake at 2068 meters altitude. For the return, retrace the same path to Baita Pozze and then descend along the easy dirt road to Ortisè.

Public transportation

You can reach Ortisè by the Trentino Trasporti bus line MALÈ – PELLIZZANO and then by the Trentino Trasporti bus PELLIZZANO – MENAS (download the outbound and return timetables).

How to get there

Stay on the SS42 and, between Mezzana and Pellizzano, turn right (if coming from Malè-Dimaro-Mezzana) onto the SP40 towards Termenago–Castello–Ortisè. Continue for about 8 km until you reach the village of Ortisè on your left.

Where to park

Parking lot at the church square.
