Perfect route to test the gravel product of Val di Sole thanks to the presence, for the most part, of sections pedaling on the comfortable cycle-pedestrian path next to the Noce River. A pleasant route among small villages, dense woods and sunny apple orchards, where splendid panoramic views of the lower Val di Sole will not be missed.
The route develops in the lower Val di Sole and will allow you to pedal your gravel bike for as much as 49 kilometers, covering almost 1000 meters of elevation gain. This interesting loop is half on the valley cycle-pedestrian path and half on dirt road, allowing you to cross characteristic villages like Ossana, where you can admire the ancient walls of San Michele Castle and sunny orchards where you can watch juicy apples take shape.
To ride this route safely, it is necessary to use a gravel bike with tires at least 38 mm wide. It is also important to have good handling skills on rough terrain and good control of the brakes on descents.
As you can imagine, the rideability of routes in a mountain environment is strictly linked to the current conditions and therefore depends on natural phenomena, environmental changes, and weather conditions. For this reason, the information contained in this sheet may have changed. Before starting, check the trail status by contacting the valley tourist offices.
Starting from the Mezzana train station, head up along the comfortable cycle-pedestrian path to the village of Ossana. We recommend taking some time to visit the majestic San Michele Castle, walking along its ancient walls and admiring the splendid panorama you can enjoy from up there. Once past the castle, the adventurous descent begins: fun fast-flowing gravel sections alternate with passages through the characteristic villages of the Valley. Upon reaching Daolasa, at the square where the Daolasa-Val Mastellina cable car starts, ascend towards Almazzago and then Costa Rotian, where beautiful views of the lower Val di Sole begin to open up. Then pedal until you reach the wild Val Meledrio, where despite the challenging climb, you can relax in the shade of the dense surrounding conifer forest. A visit to the Val Meledrio Ecomuseum is definitely not to be missed, where you can discover how iron and lime were once worked and produced by the inhabitants of Dimaro and Carciato. From here, via forest roads, sometimes rough, you first reach the Molini area in Malè, and then the Tovare area in Terzolas, descending down to the valley floor to Cavizzana. Finally, return to the starting point via the cycle-pedestrian path, thus completing the loop.
You can reach the town of Mezzana by TRENTO - MALÈ - MEZZANA train (download the departure and return timetables).
Follow the SS42 until you reach the town of Mezzana. After passing the Information Office, about 500 meters further, turn left onto Via per Marilleva and follow the road until you reach the Mezzana railway station.
You can leave your car in the parking lot of the Mezzana railway station.
To tackle this route, we recommend wearing a bike helmet and bringing a backpack with a waterproof jacket, sunscreen, and a water bottle. It is also important to carry a repair kit: inner tube, pump, sealant, patches, and a set of tools for quick repairs.
