a dive into the past

What are snowshoes?

📚 In the Rabbiese dialect: "chiaspola," verb "to chiaspolar"

During the long winters of the past, snowshoes became a vital tool for the people of the Solandro Valley. They were used to move across snowy and hostile landscapes. Every family owned a pair and used them to travel to the farmstead for milking, to deliver freshly milked milk to the dairy, or to venture into the woods to gather firewood.

🛠️ How were they made?

Traditional snowshoes were crafted using simple materials readily available in the area, such as wood and animal horns found in the forest. These were tied under footwear with leather and rope bindings. The goal was to distribute body weight over a larger surface area, preventing the wearer from sinking into deep snow.

the magic of winter

Must-see itineraries

If you love the mountains in winter but prefer the silence and calm of the woods over the excitement and adrenaline of the slopes, snowshoe walks through the snowy landscapes of Val di Sole are perfect for you!
Along well-marked and groomed trails, you can relax in nature without a care in the world. You’ll reach charming alpine huts to enjoy delicious local dishes, enchanting frozen alpine lakes covered in soft snow, and breathtaking landscapes.

💡 TIPS FROM OUR ALPINE GUIDES

#1 Choose a route suitable for your abilities and physical fitness: walking with snowshoes requires more effort, focus, and energy.

#2 Gather detailed information about the conditions of your chosen routes: before setting out on your hike, check the current and forecasted weather, assess snow conditions, and consult the avalanche bulletin.

#3 Dress appropriately for a snow hike: wear thermal clothing and dress in layers. Use winter boots that can accommodate snowshoes, or if there’s little snow or ice, wear snow spikes.
