An easy and suggestive walk: unique naturalistic and landscape glimpses in place of a great historic and ethnographic value.

Among old sawmills and impressive mountain huts, followed by the peaceful sound of the water, this round itinerary takes us to some of the more fascinating places of the Stelvio National Park. It offers a great value on a naturalistic and a cultural (in terms of preservation of local cultural traditions) point of view.

Following some of the places you should stop at:

Segheria Veneziana dei Bègoi: this is an ancient sawmill of the 18th century rebuilt by the Park. It is a testament of the hydraulic technology used until the advent of the electricity. It can still be visited and seen in full operation.

La piana del Còler (mt. 1380): a charming place characterized by its beautiful mountain huts, with their typical roofs made of "scàndole" (wooden shingles). Some of them are built with the block-bau technique, so that their external walls are made of overlapped logs.

Starting point

Rabbi – Parking area Plan

Directions

From the parking area Plan (mt. 1252), you can walk to the old sawmill “Segheria Veneziana dei Bègoi”. Crossing the second bridge on the left you will reach the sawmill. The next trail starts at the bridge, which, following the wild brook torrente Rabbiés on its right, takes to the place called “Ramoni al Còler” (be careful: the first part of this trail might not appear on old maps). Then you reach the plateau Piana del Còler (mt. 1380) with its suggestive mountain huts and the educational play area called “Il gioco del Parco”. The itinerary continues on the path left, following the road signs for “Malghe Fratte”. The path goes up into the spruce wood to reach the mountain farm Malga Fratte Bassa (mt. 1482). From the pasture in front of the farm you can have a beautiful glimpse on almost all the valley Val di Rabbi. From there you go down on a forest road (for a shorter way take the paths crossing the hairpin turns or the trail for the suspension bridge Ponte sospeso on the waterfall  Cascata Ragaiolo) and once at the brook Torrente Ragaiolo take the little road on the left towards the sawmill Segheria for 100 m. then take the path on the right, which will take you to the road at around 300 m. for the parking. As an alternative you can consider the steep trail which goes from the cross in front up Malga Fratte Bassa to the sawmill. From there the way back is the same as the way to.
