The route crosses the Val Meledrio, an area of environmental and historical importance within the Adamello Brenta Natural Park.

Medium difficulty snowshoeing route, developed along trails and forest roads marked and signposted by specific signs bearing a snowshoe.

This itinerary crosses a wild and environmentally important area within the  Adamello Brenta Natural Park.  This path, which separates the Brenta Group from the Presanella Group, historically connected the Val di Sole with the Val Rendena and is called the 'Emperor's Way' because in 1894 the Austro-Hungarian Emperor Franz Joseph traveled through here on his way to Madonna di Campiglio for the holidays he used to spend there with his wife Sissi. It is said that Charlemagne and Frederick Barbarossa also passed this way.

Suggestions

We recommend a short stop in Dimaro to see up close the Venetian sawmill, which is part of the Ecomuseum Val Meledrio. Even when no guided tours are available, it is possible to visit it through an educational-exhibition route, which describes the functions of the various internal mechanisms.

Safety information

For snow hiking activities follow these guidelines:

  • gather good information about the route and conditions before leaving. You can do this by contacting the nearest tourist information office;
  • the day before the hike check the weather forecast and the avalanche bulletin;
  • if you plan to reach a mountain hut or refuge, make sure they are open and if you intend to stop to eat or sleep, call them in advance to book;
  • before leaving, if you do not feel well, postpone the outing until you feel better;
  • never abandon waste in the mountains and, if possible, avoid leaving it near the refuges or huts you will visit;
  • if you spot wild animals along the way, we invite you not to approach, not to shout and to keep your dog on a leash to prevent it from chasing and scaring them instinctively.

Starting point

Dimaro

Directions

Dimaro (800 m) - Doss S. Brigida (1,344 m) - Masi Ronzola (1,289 m) - Folgarida/Belvedere (1,400 m)

From the village of Dimaro, follow the SS in the direction of Passo Campo Carlo Magno - Madonna di Campiglio up to the first hairpin bend, near which you will find parking.
After carefully crossing the state road, near the hairpin bend, take the forest road that ascends the Val Meledrio, making the first stop at the Ecomuseum of Val Meledrio, an open-air museum that tells the story of the places and traditions of our past.
After reaching an old lime kiln, where quicklime was once produced, climb through the dense larch forest covering the slopes of Doss di Santa Brigida, where in the past there was a hospice for travelers and pilgrims, now called Malga del Doss. Once you reach the junction that leads to the old hospice, take the small road on the right, carved into the rock. Here the Meledrio stream emerges from a narrow rocky gorge and forms some waterfalls. It is worth pausing here to admire this evocative sight. After a short break, continue to climb towards the Masi di Ronzola, until you reach the SS 239 at the Belvedere locality in Folgarida.
Follow the same route to return to the car or, alternatively, take the local bus that takes you back to Dimaro (here are the timetables).

Public transportation

You can reach the village of Dimaro by Trentino Trasporti local bus MALÈ- FOLGARIDA - MADONNA DI CAMPIGLIO (download the outbound and return timetables), getting off at the Dimaro stop at Piazza Centrale.

How to get there

From Val di Sole follow the SS42 to Dimaro and, at the roundabout, take the SS 239 in the direction of Folgarida - Madonna di Campiglio. Cross the village of Dimaro and, about 200 meters from the end of the built-up area, at the first hairpin bend, park the car.

Where to park

Parking on the right (coming from Dimaro towards Folgarida), at the first hairpin bend, where the entrance to Val Meledrio begins.
