This itinerary connects two amazing mountain farms and takes us to discover some wonderful centuries-old larches, which have roots back to the fourth century.

The oldest larches from the valley Val di Sole are on the Trentino side of the park Parco dello Stelvio above the mountain farms Malga Pontevecchio and the trail to Malga Verdignana. They are centuries-old larches, dated back to the fourth century. This thematic itinerary is one of the four itineraries named “Sentieri Dendrocronologici del Parco Nazionale dello Stelvio” (dendrochronological itineraries of the park Parco Nazionale dello Stelvio), designed thanks to the dendrochronology, which is the study of the annual tree-rings.

Thanks to the dendrochronological specific studies, based on the living trees and some pieces of old trees, it was discovered that these ancient trees are witnesses of the climate changes of the valley Val di Sole at the time of the “little ice age” (1580-1850) and during the present global warming (since 1850).

Starting point

Loc. Tablà (place) - Val de la Mare

Directions

The starting point of this itinerary Is the parking place Tablà, in the valley Val de la Mare. Cross the bridge on the brook Torrente Noce and follow the dirt road to the mountain farm Malga Pontevecchio. Take the detour going up on the slope and into the wood toward the mountain farm Malga Verdignana until you cross the path CAI-SAT n.140. From the mountain farm go back on the mule track n.140B, which takes back to the mountain farm Malga Pontevecchio.

How to get there

From the village Cogolo you need to reach by car the place Tablà, the starting point of this itinerary.

Where to park

Parking at the place Tablà, in the valley Val de la Mare.

Hiking clothing and equipment are strongly suggested, in particular:
