Medium difficulty hike that ascends mostly along a forest road to the charming Malga Saviana.

This captivating ski mountaineering excursion begins just above the village of Vermiglio and follows the forest road passing through the characteristic farmhouses of Verniana, leading to Malga Saviana. Alternating between dense forest sections and small glimpses of what are lush green pastures in summer, you arrive at the mountain hut from which you can admire a spectacular view of the snow-covered Upper Val di Sole.

Safety information

The stability of the snowpack is subject to sudden and unpredictable changes. Always consult the avalanche bulletin (on www.meteotrentino.it or other available websites for your area) and gather detailed information about the current weather conditions from the Alpine Guides Office of Val di Sole. The GPX tracks are purely indicative of the route and should not be followed without a prior evaluation of the slopes at the time of the excursion.

From January 1st, 2022, it is mandatory for ALL skiers to have an insurance policy covering liability for damages or injuries caused to third parties. The revision of the mountain safety code requires all minors to wear helmets and prohibits skiers from consuming alcohol.

Directions

Leaving the car at the clearing on the forest road leading to Malga Saviana, you proceed with skis through very diverse environments, ranging from dense coniferous forests to small open expanses, which in summer are pastures where you can find grazing cows. Continuing along the road, you arrive in Val Verniana where you can admire small and characteristic alpine farmhouses covered by a soft white blanket of snow. From here, we recommend you enjoy the spectacular view of the Upper Val di Sole, which in winter takes on an unparalleled charm. The route continues until you reach Malga Saviana, at an altitude of 1917 meters. In winter, the mountain hut is not managed, so you can enjoy a break in the sun before descending along the same path

You can reach Vermiglio by taking the MALÈ - MEZZANA - FUCINE - VERMIGLIO - TONALE local bus service (download departure and return schedules).

Where to park

You can leave the car at the clearing along the forest road that leads to Malga Saviana.

For all ski mountaineering excursions, appropriate clothing is recommended even in the event of sudden drops in temperature. It is necessary to wear suitable technical clothing that does not get wet when in contact with snow (such as Gore-Tex), gloves, a hat, sunglasses, and protective sunscreen.

It is mandatory to have with you the self-rescue kit consisting of Artva-Shovel-Probe (which can optionally be rented, see the shops where it is available for rent here). It is also advisable to wear a helmet (for minors, wearing a helmet is mandatory) or other active protection systems (e.g., backpacks with ABS-Airbag systems).

In case of hard or icy snow, the use of crampons is recommended.
