The route develops in the Stelvio National Park among traditional masi, which tell the farming past of Val di Peio.

Easy snowshoeing along trails marked by specific signage featuring a snowshoe.
This itinerary in the Stelvio National Park takes you to discover the masi, traditional buildings typical of Tyrol. Most masi, while preserving their original architecture, have been renovated but their presence still bears witness today to a rural past of hard work, effort, and often poverty. This route is a dive into the past, which we invite you to undertake with an open mind if you want to know Val di Peio better.
If during the walk you happen to meet wild animals (you are inside the Stelvio National Park: it's not that unusual!), please do not run toward them, do not shout, and avoid sudden movements that might frighten them.

Suggestions

Look carefully around you: it doesn’t happen every day to walk among such evocative landscapes that tell you about history, respect for tradition, and nature conservation.

Safety information

For snow hiking activities, follow these guidelines:

  • check well the route and its conditions before starting. You can do this by contacting the nearest tourist information office;
  • the day before the hike, check the weather forecast and the avalanche bulletin;
  • if you plan to reach a mountain hut or refuge, make sure they are open and if you intend to stay for a meal or overnight, call in advance to book;
  • before leaving, if you don’t feel well, postpone the outing until you feel better;
  • never leave waste at altitude;
  • if you spot wild animals along the path, we advise you not to approach them, not to shout and to keep your dog on a leash to avoid it instinctively chasing and frightening them.

Starting point

Little Church of Pegaia, Cogolo di Peio

Directions

Cogolo (1,194 m) - Masi Le Lame (1,307 m) - Masi Fratta Plana (1,375 m)

From the village of Cogolo, take the right toward Malga Mare and park near the lovely little church of Pegaia. Legend says that the church of Pegaia is the only building left of the ancient settlement of Pegaia, destroyed in the fifteenth century by a landslide.
From the little church take the path on the right and follow it up to Agritur Cazzuffi, where you will take, again on the right, the forest road that takes you through woods and meadows to discover several masi. Masi are farmer buildings that used to serve as barns and stables and sometimes also as storage for the few tools used in agriculture at that time.
Passing through the denser forest, pay close attention because on your right you can spot a spectacular ice waterfall, the Rio Iscle waterfall. Soon after you will arrive at Polveriera area, named because during the construction of the large dams in Val di Peio by Enel, it was the place for storing explosives: isolated, to ensure safety in case of an accident. Even today, the small caretaker's house is visible here.
Now you must continue on the right, first on a road that runs along the picturesque masi delle Lame and then on a short stretch of path up to Fratta Plana.
For the return, follow the road descending on the other side of the stream until you reach the bridge at Polveriera area, where you will see many masi. Cross the bridge and retrace the path taken on the way out.

Public transportation

You can reach Cogolo di Peio by Trentino Trasporti bus line MALÉ - MEZZANA - FUCINE - COGOLO - PEIO (download the outbound and return schedules).

From the stop, walk along the provincial road until the sign on your right for Malga Mare and continue on foot for about 20 minutes until the little Church of Pegaia, the starting point of the itinerary.

How to get there

Take SS42 to the junction for Val di Peio (on your right if coming from Malé). Turn and enter SP87 and continue for about 5 km until Cogolo di Peio. From here follow signs for Malga Mare, turning right and proceed for about 1 kilometer until the small Church of Pegaia.

Where to park

Parking near the little Church of Pegaia.
