Trekking through woods, pastures, and farmhouses on paths and meadow roads with an incredible view of some of the most imposing peaks of Val di Sole. Elevation gain 750m – Distance 15km.
Starting from the small church of Santo Stefano in Vermiglio, walk towards Masi di Verniana on a steep path. The farmhouses, located at 1,712 meters altitude, offer a breathtaking view of Presanella peak. Continuing through green pastures and crossing dense forest, you reach the Bait de Mezol, used by hunters and shepherds as shelter. The route then passes the Bait del Vedeler (1,969m) and reaches the Masi di Strino (1,762m). Near the farmhouses, amid flowering meadows, if you’re lucky, you may spot some friendly marmots peeking from their burrows. Continuing, you descend through spruce forests and fragrant flowers towards Vermiglio.
To face a mountain hike we suggest you:
You park the car near the parish church of Santo Stefano, walk along Via Sen. Bruno Kessler, and then turn right onto Via Santa Caterina, which first leads to the homonymous small church, then to the locality Dazi. From here, after about 50 meters, you take the steep path to the right, which climbs through the woods towards Masi di Verniana (1,716m). The farmhouses offer breathtaking views of the Presanella peak opposite. Leaving the farmhouses behind, you continue along the dirt road leading to the ruins of Malga Verniana (1,838m). Just before the malga, crossing a small bridge, you cross the Rio S. Leonardo and follow the Val Verniana, entering the dense forest until you reach the forest road. Then you take the path on the right that leads to the Bait de Mezol or Bait del Vedeler at 2,000m, a typical Alpine farmhouse used by shepherds and hunters as shelter. From the Bait, you descend about 200m to rejoin dirt road no. 704 (number referring to the MTB route), which continues gently downhill to the Masi di Strino (1,758 m). Just beyond these buildings, you continue to the junction with the drivable road, which in the past was the main connection to the nearby Passo Tonale. Following it downhill towards Vermiglio, parallel to the main road and in continuous and steady descent, you return to the parking near the church.
Follow the SS42 towards Passo del Tonale, and once you reach the town of Vermiglio, turn right onto Via S. Pietro until you reach the small church.
Parking near the parish church of Santo Stefano.
