Malga located in Val Strino, strategic point of the Great War.
Malga Strino is a malga with a different history, precisely because of the place where it stands, a military outpost between the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the Kingdom of Italy during the First World War. This area was the theater of the conflict and structures from that period are scattered everywhere here. Even the malga was for a time converted into a military structure, and just above it was the military cemetery for the victims who fell during the battles.

Suggestions

The route is suitable for families with children but the road is unpaved, so it can only be tackled with a good trekking-type stroller.

Safety information

To face a mountain excursion, we suggest you:

  • choose a route suitable for your preparation. If in doubt, contact our Information Offices;
  • prepare your excursion: check the weather forecast, the route you will follow and the timetables of the lifts, if your itinerary includes their use. Remember that the passability of routes in a mountain environment is strictly linked to contingent conditions and therefore depends on natural phenomena, environmental changes, and weather conditions. For this reason, get good information about the route and its conditions before leaving;
  • leave information about your itinerary, approximate return time and bring your cell phone with you;
  • pay attention to the signs and signage you find on the route: Stelvio Park signs, SAT white and red signs and red and white brushstrokes on stones or trees;
  • raise the alarm by calling 112, in case of accident;
  • book in advance the malga or refuge where you intend to stop to eat or sleep;
  • never abandon waste in high altitude and, if possible, avoid leaving it at the refuges or malgas you visit;
  • if you see wild animals along the route, we invite you to stay on the path you are walking, not to get too close, not to shout and to keep your dog on a leash to prevent it from instinctively chasing and frightening them.

ANTI-COVID-19 RULES:

  • the use of a mask must be respected even in the mountains;
  • maintain a security distance of at least 2 meters from people;
  • avoid sharing personal effects, tools, and water bottles or flasks with others;
  • carry hand sanitizer with you, to frequently disinfect hands and surfaces;

Starting point

Entrance to Val Strino

Directions

Park the car in the parking lot beside the SS42, carefully cross the road and take the old military road that climbs towards the beautiful Val di Strino. After the first part, which develops through the woods and ascends with a regular and pleasant slope, just like all roads built to serve forts and barracks of the First World War, you will start to see the forest thinning. Among wild strawberries and some wild blueberries, you will soon realize that the forest gives way to pasture, frequented not only by cows but also by many marmots, which will accompany you with their characteristic whistles along the white road. Follow the stream running beside the road until you reach the malga.
From the malga depart several more challenging excursions. If you are a walker, we recommend two destinations that are truly worth it: Cima Redival with its 2973 meters of altitude or the charming Strino small lakes with a beautiful view of the Queen with the unmistakable profile: the Presanella.

Return to the parking lot following the same route you came.
