Here, take a short break and cross the wooden bridges for a better view of the Val Maleda waterfalls. Continue to Malga Alta, where you'll enjoy the spectacular view of the surrounding mountains. Continue on to Bait Forborida, at 2,131 meters above sea level, completing the loop at Malga Stablasolo, where you absolutely must stop for a delicious homemade dessert before returning to the starting point.

Suggestions

During the summer months, the StelvioBus service is available, so you'll need to leave your car at the Plazze dei Forni car park and take the shuttle bus to the Coler car park or Malga Maleda Bassa.

Safety information

To embark on a mountain hike, we recommend:
  • Choose a route suited to your level of fitness. If in doubt, contact the Alpine Guides or our Information Offices.
  • Prepare your hike: check the weather forecast, your route, and the lift schedules, if your itinerary requires them. Remember that the feasibility of mountain trails is strictly dependent on the prevailing conditions and therefore depends on natural phenomena, environmental changes, and weather conditions. Therefore, be sure to check the route and its conditions before setting out.
  • Leave information about your itinerary and approximate return time, and bring your cell phone with you.
  • Pay attention to the directions and signs along the route: Stelvio National Park signs, red and white SAT signs, and red and white brushstrokes on rocks or trees.
  • Book in advance the mountain hut or refuge where you intend to stop for food or sleep.
  • Never abandon waste at high altitudes, and if possible, avoid leaving it at the refuges or mountain huts you will visit.
  • If you spot wild animals along the route, we encourage you to stay on the trail you are walking, don't get too close, don't shout, and keep your dog on a leash to prevent it from instinctively chasing them and scaring them.

Directions

After leaving your car at the Coler parking lot (during the summer months, it is accessible via the StelvioBus shuttle), pass the Fontanin mountain hut (1388 m) and take the path to the left called the "Wildlife Trail" (Percorso della fauna) until you reach Malga Stablaz Maleda Bassa (1731 m), where the waterfall will greet you with its roar. Take a short break to admire the water gushing over the rocks, then follow the dirt road for a few minutes until you come to a fork on the left marked "Via delle Malghe," indicating the path to Bait Forborida. After a steep section, you'll reach the pastures of Malga Stablaz Maleda Alta, where the trail becomes gentler. Crossing a few small streams, after about half an hour of hiking, you will spot Bait Forborida at 2129 m. Here you can enjoy a spectacular view over the entire Val di Rabbi and the peaks of Monte Sole, Cima Verdignana, Monte Vilar, and Croz della Luna. Continue for a short distance until you see signs from the Stelvio National Park guiding you downhill toward Malga Stablasolo (1543 m). Be sure to stop here for a slice of cake—or, if you're hungry, for a delicious meal made with local products. To return to the starting point, just follow the switchbacks along the dirt road, which will lead you back to the parking lot.

Public transportation

You can reach Rabbi Bagni by the MALÈ – RABBI BAGNI – SOMRABBI bus line (download the outbound and return timetables). From the Plan parking lot, take the Stelviobus shuttle bus to Rabbi, which will take you to the Coler parking lot where the hike begins.

How to get there

Drive along the SS42 and, once at the village of Terzolas, take the exit on the right. At the roundabout, take the second exit towards Val di Rabbi and follow provincial road 86. At the junction for the hamlet of Piazzola, turn off and follow the road until you reach the Coler parking lot.

Where to park

You can park your car at the Coler parking lot, while in the summer months you will need to leave your car at the Al Plan parking lot and then reach the Coler parking lot by taking the StelvioBus shuttle bus from Al Plan to Coler.
When hiking in the mountains, it's always helpful to:
  • Wear hiking boots suitable for uneven, wet, and uneven terrain, long pants, a hat, and sunglasses.
  • Pack a waterproof jacket, a fleece, a hat, gloves, sunscreen, and a minimum change of clothing.
  • Bring a water bottle and snacks for energy dips (dried fruit, energy bars, or chocolate).
  • Don't forget your camera or cell phone to capture your favorite views and vistas. If you like, you can share them on social media using #visitvaldisole and #valdisolevibes.
