Walk inside the Stelvio National Park with a circular route around Pian Palù Lake, with its crystal-clear colors and its characteristic mountain huts.
Medium difficulty itinerary starting from the parking lot in Fontanino that takes you to Malga Giumella. Here you can meet the friendly cows brought to the mountain hut in summer months for grazing, giving their milk a uniquely delicious flavor. Alternatively, before reaching the mountain hut, it is possible to turn left and make the loop around Pian Palù Lake, an artificial lake with emerald-colored waters that will amaze you.
Rules for mountain walks:
From the parking lot at the Fontanino location, crossing the small bridge on the left, follow the Sat 110 trail. Walking uphill and passing a couple of hairpin bends, you reach the Pian Palù lake (1810 m). Walk along the lake on flat terrain (Sat 110) enjoying its crystal-clear colors and the surrounding flora. With a slight uphill section followed by a gentle downhill, you reach Malga Palù (1824 m). Shortly after, cross the bridge, turn right onto trail 110B, and follow the path immersed in the untouched and wild Stelvio National Park. We follow the trail that leads onto a forest road and crosses some streams. From here, the pasture of Malga Giumella (1952 m) begins to come into view. Continue descending to the right along the dirt road, crossing the dam retaining wall and closing the loop back at Fontanino. At this point, you can refresh yourself at the alpine spring.
Follow the SS42 up to the junction for Val di Peio, exit right, and follow the SP87 towards Val di Peio to reach Peio Fonti. In the summer months, access is allowed before 9:30; otherwise, the road is closed to traffic and can only be traveled by the StelvioBus of Peio shuttle departing from the parking lot above the Peio Terme settlement.
If the road is open, park at the Fontanino location. If the road is closed to traffic, park at the hairpin bend above the Peio Terme settlement.
To undertake this walk, we recommend wearing hiking boots and a hat and carrying a waterproof jacket, sunscreen, and a water bottle in your backpack.
