Loop route in Stelvio National Park, among typical mountain farmsteads, woods, and pastures to reach Malga Covel and the charming Lake Covel.

This loop itinerary offers various historical, naturalistic, and geological points of interest. Due to its contained elevation difference, the type of terrain it develops on, and its beauty, it is suitable for families with children and, partially, specifically from Peio Paese to Malga Covel, it is suitable for strollers.
We suggest you have a look, just beyond the malga, at the pretty Lake Covel, one of the most photographed places in the valley, and the Rio Vioz waterfalls. Malga Covel is one of the few malgas in Val di Sole dedicated to sheep and goats and not to be missed is its goat cheese, which alone is worth the hike!

Safety information

The 10 rules for mountain walks:

  1. The accessibility of trails in a mountain environment is strictly linked to current conditions and therefore depends on natural phenomena, environmental changes, and weather conditions. For this reason, get good information about the route and its conditions before you leave. You can do this by contacting the nearest Information Office;
  2. If you plan to reach a malga or refuge, make sure they are open and, if you want to stop to eat or sleep, call them in advance to book;
  3. Leave information about your itinerary and always carry your cell phone;
  4. In case of an accident call 112;
  5. Never leave waste in the mountains and, if possible, avoid leaving it at the refuges or malgas you visit;
  6. If you see wild animals along the path, please stay on the path you are walking, do not approach too closely, do not shout and keep your dog on a leash to prevent it from instinctively chasing and frightening them;
  7. The use of a mask must also be respected in the mountains;
  8. Keep a safety distance of at least 2 meters from other people;
  9. Avoid exchanging personal belongings, tools, and bottles or flasks with other people;
  10. Carry hand sanitizer to frequently disinfect hands and surfaces;

Starting point

locality S. Rocco at Peio Paese

Directions

Leave the car at San Rocco, where the Austro-Hungarian military cemetery is located, currently the resting place of 5 soldiers from the Great War, then walk along the forest road, which is also suitable for strollers.

In the initial part of the route, you will walk among typical mountain farmsteads, then enter larch woods and alpine pastures. You will reach Malga Covel in just under an hour of walking. At the malga, we recommend buying dairy products made from goat's milk, produced and processed here at the turnario dairy of Peio, one of the few remaining in Italy.

Continue towards Lake Covel, and through the pastures you will glimpse this small glacial lake, which tells the story of the valley's glacier evolution. Now the pond is a peat bog with numerous interesting fish, amphibian, and plant species and, although small in size, its beauty lies in the shades of its waters, reflecting the forest, mountains, and sky.
Continuing for a few more minutes you can admire a pretty waterfall fed by the rio Vioz, glacier water, whose freshness you can feel by crossing the characteristic little bridge beside it. Continue until you connect to the path that will take you back to Peio Paese.

An alternative is to go up to the locality of Tarlenta from Peio Fonti by cable car and from there, just below the Scoiattolo Refuge, follow the SAT 127 path to Lake Covel and then follow signs back to Peio Fonti.

Public transportation

You can reach Peio Paese by the Trentino Trasporti bus line MALÈ - MEZZANA - FUCINE - COGOLO- PEIO (download the outbound and return schedules).
From Peio Paese you can walk to the start of the route in about fifteen minutes, climbing towards the San Rocco hill (Austro-Hungarian cemetery).

How to get there

Take the SS42 to the junction for Val di Peio (on your right if coming from Malé). Turn and enter SP87 and continue for about ten kilometers to Peio Paese or further, up to the San Rocco hill.

Where to park

Parking near the bus stop in Peio Paese, accessible from the road which on the right, at a hairpin bend, passes by the bar and leads to a large parking lot. Alternatively, park near the Austro-Hungarian cemetery at San Rocco, taking the road that climbs beside the church and continues uphill for about 1 km.

To take on this walk we recommend wearing hiking boots and a hat and carrying a waterproof jacket, sunscreen, and a water bottle in your backpack. Don't forget a camera or cell phone to capture the views and scenes you like best.
