High difficulty hike that reaches the beautiful Lakes of Malghet di Mezzana and the Cross of Peace with a spectacular view over the entire Val di Sole.
Challenging itinerary that, first on a forest road and then on an easy mule track, reaches the first of the two Lakes of Malghet di Mezzana. After crossing a dense forest of Swiss pine and larches and finally a partially equipped rocky ridge, you reach the summit of Monte Gardene, from which you can enjoy a spectacular view over the entire valley.

Be careful on the last part of the route, which is slightly technical with an iron ladder, a steel cable, and an exposed ridge section.
Prepare your hike: check the weather forecast, the route you will follow, and the schedules of the lifts, if your itinerary includes their use. Remember that the accessibility of routes in a mountain environment is closely linked to current conditions and therefore depends on natural phenomena, environmental changes, and weather conditions. For this reason, get detailed information on the route and its conditions before setting off.
Leave information about your itinerary, your approximate return time, and bring your mobile phone with you.
Pay attention to the signs and markings you find along the route: Stelvio National Park signs, white and red SAT signs, and red and white markings on stones or trees.
Book in advance the alpine hut or refuge where you intend to stop to eat or sleep.
Never leave rubbish at high altitude and, if possible, avoid leaving it at the huts or alpine farms you visit.

Directions
After parking the car at Marilleva 1400, reach Residence Artuick on foot and take the SAT trail 202, which initially follows a forest road and then a mule track to the first of the two Lakes of Malghet di Mezzana. Below the first lake, take the slightly uphill trail to reach the upper lake. Above the first of the two lakes, follow the path towards the Cross of Peace and after crossing a forest of Swiss pine and larches and a steep grassy slope, you reach a partially equipped rocky ridge that leads to the summit of Monte Gardene and then to the Cross. The return is along the same route.
Alternatively, from Marilleva 1400, you can take the lift up to Malga Panciana (view the lift opening times here) and take SAT trail 201 to Rifugio Orti. From here, continue on the trail until you meet SAT trail 202 which leads to the lakes and then to the Cross. The return is along the same route.

You can reach Marilleva 1400 by the Trentino Trasporti bus line MALE' – MEZZANA – MARILLEVA 1400 (download the outbound and return timetables).
How to get there
Stay on the SS42 and, at the roundabout in the village of Mezzana, take the second exit. Follow the road until you reach Marilleva 1400.

For a mountain hike it is always useful to:
Wear trekking boots suitable for uneven, irregular, and wet terrain, long trousers, a cap, and sunglasses.
Put in your backpack a waterproof jacket, a fleece sweater, hat and gloves, sunscreen, and minimal spare clothing.
Bring a water bottle and snacks for energy drops (dried fruit, bars, or chocolate).
