An artificial basin inside the Stelvio National Park, in whose waters sky and mountains are reflected.

A circular route with fascinating panoramic views that runs along Lake Pian Palù, an artificial basin with emerald-colored water created for hydroelectric purposes in the 1950s and that leads to the discovery of spectacular five-century-old larches. The route is also suitable for children (however, we recommend using a backpack or carrier and not a stroller!).

Safety information

 Rules for mountain walks:

  • the traversability of routes in a mountain environment is strictly linked to the current conditions and therefore depends on natural phenomena, environmental changes and weather conditions. For this reason, get good information about the route and its conditions before leaving. You can do this by contacting the closest Information Office to you;
  • if you plan to reach a mountain hut or refuge, make sure they are open and, if you intend to stop for food or sleep, call in advance to book;
  • leave details of your itinerary and always carry your mobile phone;
  • in case of an accident call the number 112;
  • never leave rubbish on the mountain and, if possible, avoid leaving it near the refuges or huts you will visit;
  • if you spot wild animals along the route, we invite you to stay on the path you are following, do not get too close, do not shout and keep your dog on a leash, to prevent it from instinctively chasing and scaring them.

Starting point

Fontanino of Peio Fonti

Directions

The Pian Palù lake is an artificial lake at whose eastern end there is the dam barrier. The recommended route goes around the lake clockwise: you immediately pass through a short tunnel and then the path continues flat through the vegetation. Alternatively, you can approach the shore by crossing the scree (also excellent for stopping to rest or to skip stones in the water… there is also a charming rocky islet that makes everything very picturesque). On your left you will see numerous small streams of water, some large enough to form small waterfalls.

Public transportation

You can reach Peio Fonti by public transport with the Trentino Trasporti bus MALE' - MEZZANA - FUCINE - COGOLO - PEIO.

How to get there

Follow the SS42 and at the height of the town of Ossana, turn right onto the SP87 until you reach Peio Fonti. From here, it is possible to reach the locality of Fontanino by car in 10 minutes.

Where to park

Park near the Fontanino.

To undertake a mountain hike it is always useful to:

  • wear trekking boots suitable for uneven, irregular and wet ground, long trousers, a hat and sunglasses
  • put a waterproof jacket, a fleece jumper, hat and gloves, sunscreen, and a minimum change of clothes in your backpack
  • bring a water bottle and snacks for energy dips (dried fruit, bars or chocolate)
  • do not forget a camera or mobile phone to capture the views and glimpses you like best. If you like, you can share them on social media using #visitvaldisole
