Rifugio Bozzi, at 2,478 meters, is located in the Montozzo Basin at the southern edge of the Ortles-Cevedale massif and was dedicated to the memory of Angelino Bozzi, an aspiring officer and silver medalist who fell on the nearby Torrione d’Albiolo during the White War. Next to the mountin hut there is the small Montozzo Superiore Lake.
To reach the Montozzo Lakes, you ascend towards Forcellina di Montozzo and follow the trail markings to the right, not to confuse them with the Sentiero degli Alpini. The route is scenic and offers panoramic views of Val di Peio. Once at the plateau, you can admire the three Montozzo Lakes, nestled like pearls in the valley below Punta d’Albiolo (2,976 meters).
Along this unmarked, rocky path, you may also come across remnants from the First World War (1915-18).
For history enthusiasts, adjacent to Rifugio Bozzi you can visit a military village and explore some of the tunnels from the wartime trenches.
From Malga di Celentino, follow the SAT 137 trail, which with a gentle slope crosses the left side of Lago di Pian Palù until it intersects with trail 111B. Continue along this trail until reaching a small wooden bridge that crosses a stream. From here, take the SAT 111 trail uphill until you reach Forcellina di Montozzo (2,613 m). From here, you can already admire Rifugio Bozzi and the picturesque lake beside it.
From Forcellina di Montozzo, follow the SAT 111 trail downhill until you reach Rifugio Bozzi. To reach the Montozzo Lakes, return to Forcellina di Montozzo and follow the trail markings to the right (not to confuse them with the Sentiero degli Alpini). Initially on grass and then on rocky terrain, the path offers a beautiful view of Val di Peio. Continuing along the rocky section, in about half an hour you will reach the first lake, and then the second one (2,740 m). The return is along the same route as the ascent.
From Mezzana, you can reach Peio Fonti by bus on the route MALÈ - MEZZANA - FUCINE - COGOLO - PEIO (download the timetables for outbound and return journeys).
