The route develops within the Stelvio National Park among traditional farms, pristine landscapes, and wide panoramas.

Easy-medium difficulty snowshoeing along marked trails with specific signs showing a snowshoe.
This itinerary in the Stelvio National Park is very pleasant both for the beautiful views it offers and because it crosses areas mostly exposed to the sun. Throughout the snowshoeing you will accompany yourself with several masi, traditional Tyrolean farm buildings once used as haylofts, and spectacular views of Val di Peio and the peaks surrounding Val di Sole.
It is not unusual to encounter wild animals on the route. Therefore, we recommend not leaving the path and, if you see animals, do not run towards them, do not shout, and avoid sudden movements that could scare them. Take advantage of the opportunity: stop, observe them in their habitat, take pictures if you wish, but with maximum discretion, in full respect of the peace of the forest.

Suggestions

You can shorten the route by taking the lifts of the ski area Pejo3000.

Safety information

For snow hiking activities, follow these guidelines:

  • get good information about the route and its conditions before leaving. You can do this by contacting the nearest tourist information office;
  • the day before the excursion, check the weather forecast and the avalanche bulletin;
  • if you plan to reach a mountain hut or refuge, make sure they are open and, if you intend to stop for a meal or overnight stay, call them in advance to book;
  • if you don’t feel well before leaving, postpone the outing until you feel better;
  • never leave waste on the mountain and, if possible, avoid leaving it at the refuges or huts you visit;
  • if you see wild animals along the route, please do not approach them, do not shout, and keep your dog on a leash to prevent instinctively chasing and frightening them.

Starting point

Peio Paese (locality Tarlenta if you choose the shorter option with lifts)

Directions

Peio Paese (1,585 m) - Masi Marassina - Rifugio Scoiattolo (2,000 m) - Piana Covel (1,810 m)

The circular route starts at Peio Paese near the bus stop, where there is also a large parking area. To reach it, follow the road that crosses the town until you reach a hairpin bend; there you will see a bar and a small road running alongside it on the right; take this road and follow it until you reach the parking area on your right. From here a dirt road starts heading towards Malga Mare, with a moderate incline and beautiful views of Val di Peio. Be careful, as this road is used by agricultural vehicles in the first part and, being very exposed to the sun, there may be a lack of snow up to the Croce dei Bagni. Continuing, you will enter a forest towards Malga Talè until the fork, where you will take the road on the left and continue uphill towards Masi Marassina. Crossing the wide pastures surrounding the farms, you will reach the Strada del Gaggio, which gradually becomes a path (specifically, path SAT 127) and will lead you through a dense spruce forest to the Rifugio Scoiattolo located in Tarlenta (1,996 m), in the heart of the charming ski area Pejo3000. Bypass the start of the Pejo3000 cable car, remaining always on path SAT 127, and you will follow a wide ridge until you meet the Via dei Monti, an ancient mule track that descends towards Peio Paese. Cross it, following signs to Malga Covel, and descend along the wide valley until you reach Malga Covel (where in summer you can buy excellent goat cheeses!) located in the eponymous plain, a place of great natural and landscape value that will captivate your sight. Continuing for about a hundred more meters, you will find Lago Covel which, when frozen, does not offer the reflections and shades that are its most appreciated features in other seasons. The real spectacle in winter is the Rio Vioz waterfalls, located a little further along the path. Cross the wooden bridge that runs alongside them and stop for some photos; it's definitely worth it! Continuing on, you will pass some characteristic farms until you descend comfortably back to Peio Paese. We strongly recommend you pay close attention when crossing the ski slope: look carefully around and give way to skiers.

A shorter alternative is to reach the locality of Tarlenta (Rifugio Scoiattolo) by the Peio Fonti - Tarlenta cable car, do the Covel loop and return to Peio Fonti using the mobility service (Info at Consorzio Turistico Pejo3000: +39 0463 754345).

Public transportation

You can reach Peio Paese by the Trentino Trasporti bus line MALÉ - MEZZANA - FUCINE - COGOLO - PEIO (download the departure and return timetables).

The itinerary starts right from the bus stop.

How to get there

Follow the SS42 to the junction for Val di Peio (on your right if coming from Malé). Turn and enter the SP87 and continue for about ten kilometers until Peio Paese, where, at the hairpin bend, you will see a bar and a small road running alongside it on the right; take the road and follow it until you see the parking area on your right.

Where to park

Parking at the bus stop, reachable from the road that on the right, at the hairpin bend, runs alongside the bar and leads to a large parking area. Alternatively, you can park near the Austro-Hungarian cemetery at San Rocco.
