Hiking route in Val di Rabbi in the Stelvio National Park, with destination Stella Alpina Refuge Lago Corvo and the charming Corvo Lakes.

The majestic mountain environment, the succession of alpine ponds and the endless panoramas of the peaks of the eastern sector of the Cevedale Group make the itinerary evocative. The magnificent Corvo Lakes, of glacial origin, are positioned near the Rabbi Pass, which connects Val di Rabbi (Trentino) to Val d’Ultimo (South Tyrol).

This itinerary is part of the One in a Million project.
Here you can participate in an experience of art, relationship, and participation that will guide you along the water routes of Val di Sole, and will make you discover how the valley community has creatively imagined its vision to protect the environment and future generations. Suggestions

From the Corvo Lakes you can admire a splendid view of the Val di Rabbi, but not only: from here the view extends from the northern outcrops of the Brenta group to the peaks of Val di Peio. Along the route, note the wonderful blooms of alpine meadows and the alarm calls of the marmots. In the waters of Lago Corvo lives a population of alpine char, which represents the typical fish fauna of high-altitude lakes.

Safety information

To undertake a mountain hike we suggest:

  • choose a route suitable for your preparation. In case of doubts, contact the Mountain Guides or our Information Offices;
  • prepare your hike: check the weather forecast, the route you will take, and the opening times of cable cars if your itinerary includes their use. Remember that the passability of routes in a mountain environment is closely linked to contingent conditions and therefore depends on natural phenomena, environmental changes, and weather conditions. For this reason, get good information about the route and its conditions before leaving;
  • leave information about your itinerary, an approximate return time, and carry your mobile phone;
  • pay attention to the signs and markings you find on the route: Stelvio Park signs, SAT white and red signs, and red and white brushstrokes on stones or trees;
  • raise the alarm by calling 112 in case of an accident;
  • book in advance the hut or mountain refuge where you intend to stop to eat or sleep;
  • never leave waste at altitude and, if possible, avoid leaving waste near the refuges or huts you will visit;
  • if you see wild animals along the route, please stay on the trail you are walking, do not approach too closely, do not shout, and keep your dog on a leash to avoid it chasing them instinctively and scaring them.

Starting point

Cavallar parking lot

Directions

Starting point from the Cavallar parking lot (1,450 m), reachable by car from the small hamlet of Piazzola di Rabbi.
From here, following the dirt road, you will first cross a bright larch forest and then a dense spruce forest, until reaching Malga Samocleva (1,892 m).
In the summer period it is possible to reach the hut by the shuttle bus service Stelviobus Rabbi.
Continue following the dirt road until you meet the SAT 108 trail marker (Sentiero Italia), which climbs on the right side of the Lago Corvo valley. The route follows a clear ridge and in the last section it crosses at altitude until the Stella Alpina Refuge at Lago Corvo (2,425 m).

From the Refuge follow the trail until, at different altitudes, you meet the Corvo Lakes, whose waters contain plants and animals of great naturalistic interest. You will reach the first lake in a few minutes and, continuing decisively, you will arrive at the second. With a slight detour to the left, you can admire the last of the Corvo Lakes, located at an altitude of 2,655 meters.
Take your time to enjoy the view and the tranquility in which the lakes are immersed, then head back towards the Refuge. Return downhill following the SAT 108 trail, passing through Malga Caldesa Bassa (1,635 m), where we recommend a stop to purchase the dairy products produced here. Continue on the trail until the parking lot in the Cavallar area.

Suggestion: if you are well-trained, from the Corvo Lakes you can climb along the SAT 145 trail up to 2,957 meters at Cima Collecchio (altitude difference from the Stella Alpina Refuge Lago Corvo: about 500 meters), from where you can view the Corvo Lakes from above and have a spectacular view of the Val d’Ultimo, the Vioz peaks, Palon dela Mare, Rosole, Cevedale, the peaks of the Maddalene group, and, located above the Dorigoni Refuge, which you will glimpse in the distance, the Sternai and Gioveretto peaks.
