EEA - Escursionisti Esperti con Attrezzature (Expert Equipped Hike)
Departure point is from the Pozzi Alti car park (1.884m) reachable by way of an old military dirt road, which begins at Stavel, near the village of Vermiglio. The 6km long road is accessible without a permit. If you wish to walk this road, take the SAT 233, which leads to the ex-Fort Pozzi Alti (1h 30 mins), one of the old Austrian-Hungarian military posts which defended Passo del Tonale.
From the car park take the SAT 233 slightly uphill and cross a tunnel dug out of the rocks and a few canals until reaching the sign SAT 206 which comes directly from Stavel. Follow the path towards Rifugio Stavel F. Denza (2.298m) which can be found on a rocky ridge at an altitude of 2.298m.
From the rifugio the SAT 206 rises steeply to start with and then follows a moraine which leads to Passo Cercen (3.022m) reachable passing some rocky plates. From here, travelling up the glacier you will reach Sella Freshfield named after one of the first climbers on Presenella in 1864. Descent from here on the Vedretta di Nardis and going around the Cima Vermiglio and a final ridge you will arrive to the cross of Cima Presanella (3.558m).
By train to Trento (Verona-Brennero line) and from here, take the Trento-Malè-Mezzana (Val di Sole) local train. There are buses from all stations. For the latest timetable go to www.valdisole.net/EN/Public-Transportation.
FROM BOLOGNA-VERONA AND FROM BRENNERO
Take the A22 motorway and exit at Trento Nord (if you are coming from the south) or S. Michele all’Adige (if you coming from the north). Proceed in direction Cles, Val di Non, Val di Sole until reaching Vermiglio.
FROM BERGAMO-BRESCIA
Proceed along the SS42 (direction Passo Tonale) until reaching Vermiglio.
Follow the signs from here to Velon. Immediately after Hotel Baita Velon take the dirt road, which to Forte Pozzi Alti.
